Just before 5 p.m. local time in Japan (early morning in the US) on March 11, 2011, an earthquake off the Pacific coast of Japan struck with a magnitude of 8.9 -- the fifth largest quake in recorded history and the largest ever to hit Japan. It triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean and devastated Japan's coastal areas with 30-foot waves.
The 22 ELCA mission personnel who serve in Japan are safe. ELCA members stand in solidarity with sisters and brothers in the Pacific Rim.Your gifts to ELCA Disaster Response, designated for the Pacific Earthquake & Tsunami, will be used entirely (100 percent) in response to this disaster. You may also choose to give to ELCA Disaster Response where the need is greatest -- enabling our church to respond where help is needed most around the world and close to home.
