Vita Pastor John F. Backe is a native New Yorker. After graduating from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, he was called as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan, NY. After ten years in that position he left to take two part-time positions, Protestant Campus Pastor at New York University and Chaplain of the Hospice Program at St. Luke's Hospital. In 1991 he moved to Syracuse, NY to be the Pastoral Care Coordinator for the Hospice of Central New York. In 1997 he returned to parish ministry at All Nations Lutheran Church in Jersey City, New Jersey. Pastor Backe has also served as interim pastor of several congregations during his career. Pastor Backe is the former Coordinator of the Lutheran Peace Fellowship and has served on the boards of many community organizations including: The Food & Hunger Hotline, Upper Room AIDS Ministry and AIDS Interfaith NY, all in New York City, and Jersey City Connections, an AIDS buddy program. He has served on numerous synod committees and work groups. Pastor Backe joined Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Denver in September, 2002. He currently serves on the governing boards of The Lutheran AIDS Network and the Greater Capitol Hill Events Center.
