2011 Vacation Bible School

vbsFor the whole week of VBS, we focused on the Bible parable of the sower and seed (Mark 4:1-9), examining sets of verses each day: what happens to seed when it falls on rocks or goodsoil or gets eaten by birds, and how our faith in our lives is like the seed.

Each morning we gathered in the sanctuary to sing fun songs about planting (“The Hole in the Ground”) and doing our part to change the earth and spread God’s Word. We embraced theideas of “letting our light shine” and being “blooming flowers created by God.” We especially emphasized “recycle, reuse, renew—we can do it!”

Near the end of each day, the kids planted their own seeds for pizza ingredients: oregano, tomato, sweet basil, onion, and pepper. On a particularly sunny day near the end of the week, OSLC member Frank Tapy showed us how to cook cheese quesadillas using a solar-powered oven.

The preschoolers got their hands dirty, digging in a bin full of all sorts of seeds, and Dirt is Goodmaking hand prints on paper with fingerpaint. They took a “nature walk” to inspect flowers and trees, and to find “puffballs” (dandelions gone to seed). They even encountered a pineapple on the sidewalk and met a sweet puppy walking with his owner.

In the Games/Snacks area, the kids engaged in races to sort recyclables into tubs, and to make their way blindfolded across the courtyard, verbally guided by teammates. They snacked on hummus and crackers, and created their own trail mixes using energy-boosting nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and chocolate.

At lunchtime we were treated to nutritious and delicious offerings of root vegetables, ravioli, chicken quesadillas with all the fixings, and even banana splits! Everyone was encouraged to put food waste into designated buckets for composting.

Self-portraitThe Community area was decorated to represent the downtown Denver area, complete with the city“skyline” and Cherry Creek flowing through the room. Here, the kids got to draw self- portraits, create a cross sculpture and robot and musical instruments out of “junk,” and hang outin “the house that Dan built.”

In the Self area, decorated like a comfy home, kids made life-sized tracings of themselves andlistened to stories. In the World area, they were surrounded by colorful maps of nations and lots of plants as they examined interesting rocks and National Geographic images.

Throughout the week, we enthusiastically repeated our mantra: Grow In Faith (Have Fun!)…

Change The World! Certainly the sower parable and the concept of “Going Green” means more to all of us now!
